Did anyone think we fell off the face of the earth? We are still here, just busy and finally starting to fall into some sort of pattern. Ari is doing well. I would definitely note an improvement in her ability to pay attention to you. Awareness, but she is beyond just being aware now. She actually has a need to be held now, and cries when she feels this way. She also seems to know when one person or another is holding her, although I think she appreciates any holding. She is especially fond of her grandfather (papa) and calms right down when he holds her or talks to her, and one day she even through a fit when he had to leave, just crying and not happy. She studies your face at those times when her brain allows her eyes to work, although there are times when she still just stares. But she even then will listen, and you can watch her kind of glancing around trying to find out what she is hearing. Sarah and I attribute all this to the hyperbaric chamber specifically, and beleive we will continue to see progress with each week. As of today she has had 8 chambers, which is what we call them. She has even had one test run of 2 in one day, and she did fine. So Dr Murray is going to try to get her scheduled to do 2 chambers a day. Thursday she will have 2, then have her pt, ot, and speech at Brooks outpatient. After her third chamber, she started sleeping pretty solidly for most of the night. She hadn't been, and at times would cry and scream late into the night. I think we have had only one night since like that. Of course, when Ari sleeps, we sleep, so this is one of our happiest advances. We also attribute that to the chamber. She has been to the GI Doctor in Tampa twice since our last update, and a neurologist in Tampa also. She doesn't seem to be constipated anymore, but now has a persistent gas, or air problem. I say air because we think that when she is throwing her grouchy, frustrated fits so common with brain injury she is grinding her teeth and swallowing the air. Of course there is no treatment for air, so hopefully she will pass this phase soon. She has been getting more of a variety diet since she left Brooks, eating some stage 3 baby food at times along with the Elecare we switched her to. She is even eating more and more food by mouth, eating over 1/4 jar yesterday in one sitting. She has had some of her med's removed, and some others adjusted. So she doesn't get as much or as many, which makes it easier for us to keep up with. She is still on the valium, although a low dose. It's hard to believe that at such a low dose it is doing much, but maybe as part of the doctor, drug company contracts they like to keep a lot of folks just barely addicted. Her diapers and vomiting have been as they should. She has gotten sick this morning, but we think she may actually have a cold or something. Normally though, over the past week and a half or so, she has only vomited twice, both with she was really upset. We are mostly aware of what might cause it now, so we can try to avoid it. Also, she has continuous feeds at night with mostly no problems. She eats all night as a result, where as right up until she left Brooks the nurses were having to stop her feeds in the middle of the night. We aren't sure if this is from her sleeping so soundly, or the Elecare, or both, but it's definitely an improvement. So all around, Ari is moving along, slowly, but surely. She has her days, or not even days but maybe half days or hours, where she kinda takes a few steps back, but then she recovers from that. We are beginning to have a pattern that we can look to and adjust to. Sometimes, especially now when she cries just as if she was Arianna before the accident, it's easy to believe that she could just all of a sudden pop upright as if nothing ever happened. We will continue to push along and hope along every day. Thank you for all the love and support in every way. Back to Jax now.
